Student Spotlight
Hi! I’m Adele and this is my student spotlight, so here goes…
I have always had an interest in beauty, at first it was more for myself that as a career choice. I had been watching nail and makeup tutorials and having a go at home for quite a while, and more so after I gave up my Social Work career through stress. My friend and I bumped into one another, and she told me she was enrolling on a nail course. She asked me if I wanted to do it with her and I said yes.
I love to learn, I enjoy assignments, research, even the exams so it was great to challenge myself as it had been a while since I’d been in any sort of learning. I just loved all of the artistry. I was appalling at even painting nails when I started, and yet by the end I had been taught, and further developed a real love for finer art, and quirky techniques. Honesty, whilst the learning was fun, my favourite part, and the reason I’ve gone onto the combined beauty course after was meeting the people at NBA, being part of something again. I haven’t worked for eight years and whilst I have lots of great friends meeting new people is my passion. I love helping people and being a supportive part of the team, and I feel that the students and tutors at the NBA are really good at that too. I have made more great friends through the NBA!
It was a very different type of course from what I’ve done before as my background was as a Nursery Nurse and Social Worker. However, it has been exactly as it should be for a vocational course, the background learning, alongside the practical, and lots and lots of practice and student lead learning, Google, YouTube and Pinterest are definitely your friends when doing a course like this!
Kaye is a fantastic tutor, encouraging and supportive. She never made us feel like we weren’t good enough, just always giving us the tools we needed to get better.
As for the students, as I said above, I’ve made great friends, at the academy, people come from all different backgrounds, and with different experiences and we all bring our skills together and share, so we all improve. I couldn’t have got through and learned the skills I have, without the camaraderie of my fellow students.
I feel that the practical skills have been what I’ve gained most during my time at NBA, and ignited a love of MUA that before was just an interest. However, what the course has allowed me to do is use my people skills, help my fellow students, lend a hand, and remind me how much I love being part of something.
My plan is to go into making and selling my bespoke artificial press-on nails, I have begun looking at how to go about all of this and feel this is where my future will take me as I can work around my own lifestyle and commitments.
I am really overwhelmed that I have been nominated for the VTCT Excellence Awards, it’s a special thing to be thought of as good enough for an accolade like this and it means a great deal to me. I know the college have some fantastic talent so to be nominated by Kaye is incredible.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to Kaye, Vanessa and Georgia who have all been immensely supportive during my journey, and certainly without Kaye’s encouragement I wouldn’t have even passed my nail course, let alone come back for more. Most of all I’d like to say thank you to both cohorts of students who have accompanied me on my journey, as well as those on other courses who keep me going. As a final and huge thank you, without Helen Jobling I wouldn’t have even known about the course!
